Description Job Role

HMP Berwyn will offer exceptional learning & skill provision with a focus on rehabilitation to the men it houses. The curriculum offer will support this process and we are seeking exceptional staff to help us deliver this agenda across a wide range of areas.

As directed by the Hub Manager you will support and coach learners to ensure they remain proactively engaged in learning. Working with other service providers throughout the prison and across the broad range of the curriculum areas to support learners and help them address barriers you will also ensure that you meet budget, quality and operational targets and provide a high quality, learner focused service to meet contractual requirements and standards, in line with agreed policies and procedures.

  • Key Accountabilities


    • Manage a specific identified case load of clients by providing appropriate pastoral support and coaching.
    • Assess each clients on their suitability for employment or training and signpost accordingly.
    • Offer unbiased, clear and up to date information, advice and guidance on routes to employment or Further/Higher Education courses upon and after release.
    • Empower and support your clients to complete their own Curriculum Vitae and job searches.
    • Manage expectations and undertake to discover potential barriers to employment of training.
    • Effectively liaise with all referral agencies internally and externally regarding the safeguarding and progression of learners.
    • Sign post and refer clients (where appropriate) to other providers both within and outside the prison to ensure they remain engaged in learning and self –development i.e. CRC, DWP, Careers Wales, OMU and HMPPS.
    • Work closely with the all of the delivery teams and Prison Industry provider to identify those men requiring additional coaching support.
    • Understand and work within the parameters of ROTL, HDC and other licensing conditions
    • Organise, promote and implement Employment Fairs and Progression Days at HMP Berwyn in conjunction with the Community Cohesion Manager
    • Build and develop relationships with companies in North Wales and on a National level. You will manage your portfolio of stakeholders through agreed means of communication.
    • Mediate and communicate with employers, if the client's work position has been kept open until release.
    • As Resettlement begins with Settlement, it is essential to support and liaise with the Induction Team. In particular offering advice and guidance and contribute to Individual Learning and Work Plans (ILWPs) for all learners, ensuring effective progression against profiled learner targets and outcomes.
    • Work closely with the Resettlement Facilitator to ensure that the individual needs of the clients at Berwyn are being met.
    • Attend meetings with clients through the gate to further provide support with employment or educational courses.
    • Ensure accurate recording of data to ensure income generation is fully maximised
    • Support the quality assurance processes relating to training provision where appropriate.
    • Support the progression of learners in regard to ESW targets.
    • To seek regular feedback from learners and action recommendations.
    • To provide excellent and effective customer service.

  • Qualifications

    • Hold an appropriate supporting qualification at L3 ie. NQV in Information, Advice and Guidance - Desirable
    • Hold at least a L 2 qualification in Literacy and Numeracy - Essential
    • The ability to speak fluent Welsh - Desirable

    • Have experience in the pastoral support of learners- Essential
    • Experience within a similar role - Essential
    • Experience of working with both employers and service users - Essential
    • Experience of working within a prison, further education or training setting - Essential
